Congratulations

CONGRATULATIONS SUPER8EXPERIMENT

Our video looked tops when it was screened at the CFI Sunday night at the Birmingham Hotel in Fitzroy. I felt we have really been able to join forces and create a great artwork with many different views and styles - and it flows so nicely!

I hope we can continue creating collaborations like this and keep this group going. I know it can be difficult for some but I have gained a lot out of this, not only having to work with other artists but the whole idea of working with a new medium which I had completely no idea about how it would turn out - if at all it would. Our "stuff ups" or "unexpected results" have been great learning curves and have been great technically and artistically in our creation.

I was hoping that I could grab a copy of the video - I have a hard drive and/or I am happy to bring along a DVD. Also Eli am I able to grab a copy of my original file?

Nice one! Lets keep this going - and maybe have a catch up session and discuss the future of our Experiment??! :)

Happy Filming

Super 8 meeting this Friday.

Hi everyone

Just a short message to say that we will be meeting at Federation Hall at 9.30am-ish next Friday. David Shea will talk a bit about what's happening on the Sunday and then we will all head to Photography to put all our films together.

I think the general consensus is that we will go digital, editing them together in Final Cut Pro and borrowing a digital projector from photography. This will allow us to just put it on loop all night and not have to worry about it too much (plus my super 8 projector is a bit broken and we've had a bit of drama using other ones!)

So if you already have your film transferred to DVD, great, if not and you need to film it digitally on the Friday, let me know and I can try and bring in my projector (but it will be a lot easier to just have it transferred).

For those organising processing today, the details of what to do are at:

http://www.nanolab.com.au/processing.htm

I think that's all for now. See you all next week!

Cath.

Super 8 where to?

Hi everyone

I trust that everyone had a good break, or that in the very least it was better than mine! Unfortunately I just worked the whole time... so am very happy to be back at school, although I feel a bit shell-shocked at how fast our final semester is going past...

So I thought being the start of the 3rd week of semester (!) I would see how everyone is going with:

a) their filming
b) their processing
c) their plans...

As for plans, I wondered who would be interested in continuing with this project in semester two in order to show our film/s at the "Collaboration Festival Event" that David Shea was talking about for Sunday 29th August? If people are, this is only three weeks away, so we should meet up to do some planning/watching of films soon. Heidi has kindly offered that we could use her house as a central meeting point, or alternatively we could use one of the rooms in photography if it is during school hours.

Given how busy everyone is, it could be difficult to find times that suit everyone... but remember we have the CFI class reserved on Friday 27th to do a bit of last-minute planning. And also on that note, our lovely percussionists have let me know that they won't be available on the 29th, so will have to find something/somebody else to do music/percussion/sound if wanted.

Anyway, I thought I'd just get in touch with everyone to see how people are going... Maybe so that it's easier to keep track of everyone's responses, it would be best to comment on the blog...

Cheers

Cath.

Lomo Tank Processing Workshop

Here is another invite from Richard at NanoLab. Sounds really good, but unfortunately I'll be away this weekend:

Hello Artist Film Workshopers,
just a quick note to let you know about the Lomo Tank processing workshop
being held on the 31st of July (Saturday). Please take a look at the
following link to find out more:
http://artistfilmworkshop.org/workshops.html
The workshop will cost $20. Tanks (freshly imported from the Ukraine for
the occasion) will be available for sale for $200. We will be learning
all there is to know about black and white reversal processing in the
Lomo.
Please email if to show your interest and to ask questions about the
workshop.
all the best
AFW

Also when I mentioned to him that a few us were thinking of making a day trip up to Daylesford he writes:

If there was a group of you wanting to come up to Daylesford, we could run
a workshop that interests you. Have a think if that idea is worth
pursuing. My idea is to help give artists the capacity to do things for
themselves with cine film.

This sounds great, the only trouble is finding the time!!

Meet, Suggestions, Edit

Hello all,

So there was a meeting last Wednesday (23/06/10), however there were only 3 people there, so it didn't go very long. I now have one camera & will film in Italy, Renee & Renuka have another and Irene has the other. Ben also has a camera he said he would be happy to lend, so have a chat to him if you would like to use it.

Heres a few things that people have been shooting:
Reflections
Bands
People dancing/singing
Trams
Car Lights
Lights/Party Lights
Textures on Flowers/Plants
Motion of texture & colour....

When uni starts back we should probably meet again, see if anyone needs to do more filming, or processing....

It was suggested that we send films away in a big order to be processed as it can cost a bit... A road trip to Daylesford was also suggested, so we wouldn't have to pay for it to be transported, and we could also film part the road trip, but se will see I guess.
Another suggestion when editing, was to edit from day through to night (as in morning, mid-day, afternoon, night etc...)... A day in the life of super 8.

So get thinking about suggestions on editing now, as its not far away :D..... See you all soon :)

Film Stills #1

For my first film I took a series of still meditations around a heritage listed house that I spend a bit of time at. I was thinking of Tacita Dean when I made it. These are some digital stills that I took... the film will follow shortly... and of course, being super 8, will have a completely different quality...

Before winter break...

Hey guys,

I was just wondering, do we want to catch up before the winter break just to see how many people need to shot and exchange cameras around again...
Also just to throw a few more ideas around maybe??

What are thoughts on this?

just some research

Hey I have been just been trying to look to see what the future of Super 8 film holds and well...it sounds expensive, and yet still dying.

Swedish manufacturer Ikonoskop is planning a Double Super 8 version of their compact and affordable A-cam SP-16 Super 16mm model, yet it still sounds crazy. Read link below for further information:

http://www.retrothing.com/2007/01/a_new_super_8_m.html

also the production of film still seems to be happening and Cambridge appear to run a Super 8 film Festival...who knows where our work will end up at?

http://onsuper8.blogspot.com/

did you know there was a Super 8 magazine available?

hope all is going well for everyone.

Experimental Film Screening Initiative.

Hi all

Before I sent my film up to Nanolab recently I had a good phone chat with the guy who runs it, Richard Tuohy. He was really interested in what we were doing as he is in the process of trying to start up a Melbourne experimental film group for people to publicly screen experimental film-based works (8mm, 16mm etc.)

He is already organising one for Thursday 24th June, which is very soon. He said that he would love to have any of us who are interested on board to help with any aspect, and especially if any of us had a film or two that we would like to contribute.

He said if anyone had a film they wanted to screen on the 24th of June he would be able to process it at a reduced price (like maybe $5 + postage.) If anyone is interested in getting on board either for this screening, or future ones, give him a buzz.

He is planning the screening to be held at The TAPE Space, corner of
Bouverie St and Queensberry St at the edge of the city:

http://www.tapeprojects.org/

There is also a website for more information:

http://artistfilmworkshop.org/

It sounds like a great initiative! Talk soon.

DUE DATE FOR SEMESTER 01

Just a reminder that you individually need to submit some form of documentation on June 4th by 4pm to SAS in the HUB, and ensure that you receive a receipt proving that you did submit stuff.

Processing news.

Hi all

Today we found out that FilmPlus Australia are no longer processing super 8 film, although they are still offering their transfer services.

This will mean that now we will have to send our films to either Nanolab in Daylesford or a place in Kansas, USA, called Dwaynes Photo. I'll add their websites under the links list.

It is a bit inconvenient and will mean that it's a bit more expensive because we will have to include postage in the price of processing- but luckily it's not the end of the world!

I have a film ready to get processed. Anyone want to share postage with me? I'll probably send it off on Monday or Tuesday next week.

Oh and I should say, there are no more films left- so people will now need to start buying their own...

Cheers

Cath.

PS- Anyone know when our assessment is due?

Night Colours vs Day Colours

Haiku from Big Sur® on Vimeo.

I have been thinking about colours like this for some time..just thought I would share. i don't think that this film will work at night but I'm thinking/hoping daylight will sit well with it as well, as this video shows.

Particularly with the video just above, I like how the creator has a story and personally can feel whats behind it. Something kind of magical about that. It reminds me of the days of being a little kid and finger painting.

enjoy.

Cameras...

Hey Everyone,

Sorry that Fiona and I have been absent from most of the meetings and blog updates. We're in an intense rehearsal process with an international Choreographer who's trying to put on a show at the end of this month, so it's been crazy busy with long hours. But we have been discussing our plans...

Firstly we would like to film next week (using Friday's class to start, and then have it over the weekend) so who has the cameras right now and is able to pass it onto us? If you could get back to me via e-mail (akeeble@ugrad.unimelb.edu.au) or on the contact number provided on the spreadsheet, that'll be greatly appreciated.

We would like to explore colours in an environmental setting, trying to find a location that is either manufactured or organic in nature that has contrasting tones and qualities. Some ideas are that we look into spaces like the botanical gardens and manipulate the space with objects (e.g. balloons or paper), or alley ways that have graffiti and try to give it a different look by adding other elements to change the perspective. Kinda hard to explain... our inspiration is from the show "Pushing Daisies", check out a little intro of the show and notice the colours:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PLTisQf8M9M&feature=related

Another idea is that we have sheets of paper in different bright colours and get people to write on them...not sure what they will write, maybe stories, quotes, pictures etc...and then have them trail along a path in some type of dull setting to give contrast.

Maybe we'll mix the two.

Anyways, if anyone would like to add to these ideas for further inspiration that would be great. Those who have the cameras and aren't using them, could they get back to us ASAP? Thanks. We'll grab it next friday during the presentations.

I hope you all had a good weekend.
Take care,
Tony and Fiona

Class update.

Hi guys

Just to let everyone know that today in class a few of us got up and gave a little presentation of what we're up to, including this blog.

I hope everyone's filming is going well... We have only a few weeks until we have to get our individual documentation together for submission. I am planning on submitting my film hopefully along with documentation of a test screening involving percussion. Maybe we could get together a week before assessment is due to show our films so far and trial the purcussion and music?

Also if a few people have films ready to get processed, it might be cheaper if we get them processed all together (and transferred if people want)... so let everyone know before you take a film in.

And lastly, Brunswick Arts, a small artist run space, welcome one-off events, so as well as an outdoor screening we could possibly think about a more formal event in a gallery space?

Food for thought.

filming.

hey everyone, daniel recently purchased a super 8 canon 1014 autozoom off ebay.

today we started filming we're probably about 1.20 mins into the 3 mins. the colour we're focusing on is green; we've been filming an area with lush green grass, moss, dew, running water as well as a small canal and giant drains you can walk inside of! we followed the canal and found this strange crypt like drain entrance with sludgy stairs that were running with water, leading down to a concrete tunnel. but by this time the light was shocking, so we went to get fish and chips and are planning to go back the next bright day.

we were thinking of something like this

we'll try post some photos of the location soon

thats all!

Free Punk super 8 night.

Hey guys, There is this free punk super 8 night coming up at Melbourne Uni, hosted by the Ian Potter Museum of Art. It sounds like they will also play live music, which would be cool. I'm definitely going to go, let me know if you are interested in coming along too...

Punk Super 8 in Brisbane: Jeanelle Hurst, John Nixon, Gary Warner

Date: Friday 7 May 2010

Time: 6:45 for 7—9 pm

Location: Theatre A, Elisabeth Murdoch Building (located behind the Ian Potter Museum of Art)

What interests a Dadaist is the way he himself lives...
(Tristan Tzara, Dada Manifesto, 1920)

Mirroring street style and contemporaneous popular music, and paralleling key developments in other parts of the world, a distinct art practice emerged in Brisbane in the punk/post-punk art scenes of the early 1980s. Aware of, and informed by, international currents in post-structuralist thought and No-Wave music, radical Brisbane artists nonetheless critically restructured these developments to their own creative ends. Through hybrid, performance-based events involving music, film, installation and performance, the artists in this film program challenged the revered art object as the fetishistic depository of beauty, and, like the Dadaists their work has been compared to, celebrated the power and pleasure of the instantaneous moment. Made in an era of repressive conservative rule and general cultural stagnancy, these 'Brisbane Dada' films provide a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the artists who made them: Gary Warner, John Nixon, and Jeanelle Hurst.

Films will be screened in their original format by OtherFilm. Gary Warner's films will be accompanied by a live score performed by Ian Wadley. Danni Zuvela (OtherFilm) will introduce the films. This is an event of the exhibition MELBOURNE>

meeting?

hi everyone, i was just wondering if we are meeting again this friday?
i have had the canon camera this week and have done a bit of shooting, but would love some help to do some more on friday during class time if anyone is keen. Also if anyone else needs the camera please let me know and ill bring it to you...
I have mostly been shooting things that make loud noises....eg glasses smashing, so the music people can replicate the sound or just make a loud noise when it is screened....however it is a bit difficult to do it all by myself (hard to hold the camera and do the action) so it would be great if others could help me a little

I have also found this website which is pretty interesting....some great ideas here....and i guess if anyone was interested they could make a single movie and enter it in the competition:

ok hope to see you all soon

Hey Everyone,

Renuka and I met last Friday during our meeting time to discuss our ideas for our segment of film. I thought I'd fill you in on some of the details.

We have decided to use a series of different locations in which to shoot, and we are going to use drawing to have a 'conversation' about each landscape. Placing a sheet of clear perspex in front of the camera, we are going to take it in turns to draw onto the surface, choosing elements of the landscape to draw. With each part that we draw, we will take still shots to achieve a stop motion animation effect. Posca pens, paint and other materials will be used, as well as some live action filming.

Our first day of filming will be this Sunday (weather permitting..fingers crossed!)

We are also meeting again this Friday to make sure all of our materials are ready for Sunday.

See you all soon, Renuka and Renee

Waiting to turn into Puzzles

Below is a link to David Young (composer) and Louise Curham (video artist)'s collaboration between chamber music composition and Super 8 film, titled Waiting to turn into Puzzles.

I find the approach to how the score was created very interesting. Each musician is given a colour and reads along the actual film in sync with the projection, playing their interpretation of the presence of their colour (the more green, the louder they play, for instance). Perhaps a way to approach the live percussion score.

Also, I've been thinking certain colours could trigger sound types (metal, toys, skins, wood, etc)

Burzum - Dunkelheit (Excellent Quality)

First Post

Hi guys

I have set up a blog for us to keep in contact, share ideas and to document our process. Let me know if you want to change anything, but I will try and give everyone the same access so that you can post independently or make any changes.

I dropped our project details off to David last Friday, under project description I wrote,

We will each be making a super 8 film using colour in the film as a trigger for change of scene or sound. Through the editing process we will re-mix the films to create one cohesive work. We will publicly screen the films in the city somewhere, outdoors, accompanied by live percussion. We will document the process throughout.

So far we've had two meetings, one at the Malthouse to throw a few ideas around and then last week in the library where we brought in dvds to share... Next meeting is this Friday 23rd at 10am in the library again.

Let's get filming!
